Accession of Poland to the European Union (EU) has become without doubt a powerful opportunity for the Polish economy. Financing infrastructure investments from EU funds contributed not only to increasing competitiveness and improvement of the quality of people’s lives, but also made a need for sustainable development real. Effects of the development (including a decline in oil resources, an increase in greenhouse gas emissions, an increase in pollution of the environment with all its consequences) caused a necessity to revise an existing concept of the intensive use of natural resources and change an economic doctrine. A new concept involves meeting needs of present generations while respecting the opportunities for people living in the future. An increase of significance of the railway transport and launching an investment offensive in railway in a previous and a current EU financial framework seems to be a result of this approach. An aim of the article is to present user security assurance in railway stations that were developed as a result of recent construction investment projects. A range of activities to be executed in order to increase a standard of transportation security was presented. A list of risk factors that come from a specificity and technical features of the buildings was indicated. The author underlines a threat of terrorism and risks that are connected with this phenomenon. Some best practices and security gaps were described on some examples of construction and modernization of railway stations. The analysis can be helpful in a process of improving rail security measures.
