Abstract

Purpose – To give state of the art on cash balance modelling, based on literature considering cash management models. Design/methodology/approach – Cash balance forecasting is absent in the mainstream of corporate finance, however there is no doubt about the necessity of cash forecasting for cash management purpose. In the face of the limited literature this paper reviews a relevant literature on cash management. All cash management models are nested in a priori assumed pattern of cash flows. The particular cash models are identified and next classified in three dimension problem-space regarding: (i) no. of explanatory variables included in the model, (ii) time dimension included in the model, and (iii) inclusion of uncertainty in the model. Findings – The available knowledge on modelling cash balance is ordered, few drawbacks of the applied approaches to cash balance modelling are listed and a directions for future research are specified. Originality/value – To the best of my knowledge such a review is absent in polish literature, previous reviews published in English include papers of: (Gregory 1976; Srinivasan, Kim 1986; Moraes et al. 2015).
