Abstract

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the degree of use of patent research by manufacturing enterprises in Poland, and to identify the factors influencing the taking of such activities by the surveyed companies. In the study the results of a survey conducted among intentionally selected group of 48 innovation-active manufacturing enterprises were used. Time range of research covered the period 2014–2016. The results allow to conclude that the surveyed companies use patent data in a relatively wide range, especially to observe current trends in technological progress and to track the activity of competitors. The findings also indicate that the propensity to undertake patent research may depend on such factors as company size, the level of innovativeness, the degree of internationalization or involvement in interorganizational cooperation.
