Abstract

The use of cloud computing in the global economy is constantly growing. It raises a question about the use of this technology in Poland against a background of the European Union member countries, and what advantages it gives to entrepreneurs who are users of this technology. The main purpose of this paper is to define the term ‘cloud computing’ as well as to determine its models, and to discuss its capabilities to be used in different areas of business activity, both in Poland and in the European Union member countries. The data analysis indicates that the use of cloud computing technology among enterprises in the European Union member countries has significantly grown in recent years. An average of the cloud computing use in the European Union member countries accounted for 22% in 2016. This represented an increase over 2014 of 3%. Moreover, entrepreneurs who make use of cloud computing point out many advantages associated with the growth of employees’ efficiency and satisfaction, with enhancing competitive advantage, with sales growth and a decline in IT infrastructure costs. It also indicates that cloud computing and the services offered on the basis of this technology are going to play a crucial role in development of SMEs, thereby giving them distinct advantages, which in turn are reflected in better financial results.
