Abstract

The purpose of the article is an attempt to provide a synthesis of the results of existing studies about the expected effects and adverse impacts of the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme in the first two phases of its implementation covering the period from 1st January 2005 till 31st December 2012. The expected effects of the system functioning include the achieved level of greenhouse gases reduction as well as higher innovativeness and investments in the EU ETS sector. The occurrence of windfall profits earned by some corporations in phase 2, caused e.g. by free allocation of allowances, was considered the highly undesirable effect.
