(The new methodology of balance of payments)

Abstract

The aim of the study is to identify the most important changes in balance of payments statistics resulting from the introduction of the new Balance of Payments Manual (BPM6) in 2009, which replaced the previous BPM5 issued in 1993. The study attempts to answer the following research question: what are the differences between the value of various components and categories (entries) of the Polish balance of payments calculated according to the old and new manual. The paper consists of two parts. The first part presents changes to balance of payments statistics introduced by the new manual; the second section examines the impact of the new standards on different components of the Polish balance of payments in 2013. The results show that after the change of methodology the largest differences in the Polish balance of payments were observed in the financial account and in net errors and omissions.
