The aim of this article is to present the changes that are taking place on the market of international road freight transport within the European Union. A highly fragmented and technologically lagging industry is now facing the prospect of profound transformations. To date, the competitive advantage of carriers has been built largely on the basis of lower labour costs, especially in the group of truck drivers. With a growing shortage of human resources and rising personnel costs, fast-growing technology can not only significantly reduce inefficiencies in the industry, but also change the balance of power in the market. It is too early to judge whether the changes will be revolutionary or evolutionary in nature. Nevertheless, it can be expected that their nature will be important and will force transport companies to take the necessary adjustment measures.
