Abstract

The paper deals with the Canadian seaports with emphasis being put upon financing of their operations and development. The Canadian port industry is composed of three categories of ports: those belonging to the Canadian Port Authorities and subject to the federal legislation, regional ports under the jurisdiction of provincial governments and/or municipal bodies and remote ports managed directly by Transport Canada. Despite their huge impact upon the nation’s economy, Canadian seaports receive limited support from the Government. That puts them into less favourable competitive conditions compared to their American counterparts. While comparisons between Canada and Poland should be made with caution, there exist areas where the Canadian institutional set-up and finances could serve as an inspiration for Poland’s port industry.
