Abstract

Studies of the economic situation in the heavy goods road transport are being conducted at the Motor Transport Institute since 1997. They are aimed at systematic monitoring of the situation in the transport sector, as well as obtaining information regarding anticipated changes in this situation in the near future. These studies incorporate the economic situation test method enabling to obtain anticipatory information, in relation to official statistics, on the situation in the transport sector. The purpose of this article to characterise the methodology of the economic situation in the heavy goods road transport, as well as synthetic presentation of the results and the analysis of the changes in the period before and after the Polish accession to the European Union. Article summarizes the results of research, especially those relating to the financial situation of the transport companies (both operating domestically and internationally), the volume of haulage, investments, competition, barriers hampering the development.
