Abstract

Supporting innovation is a clear line of action of modern knowledge economies. Various types of innovations contribute to sustainable development, an increase of quality of life and changes on labour market and lead to strengthening the region’s or country’s competitiveness. The objective of the article is to present results of the analysis conducted from the perspective of the amount of funding for research and innovation in the transport sector in the European Union, taking into account the distinction between public and private sources. In the article current policy programmes for the development of innovations have been reviewed and additionally results of studies and analyses of trends in terms of the amount of expenditure on research and development in transport have been examined. Moreover on the base of the latest available statistical data it is evaluated the level of public and enterprises R&D funding in different countries and specific transport modes. Ineffective innovation policy at the EU  level and close relationship between expenditures and effects in the form of increase in the level of innovation of individual countries has been proved.
