Abstrakt

Polish educational law of the interwar period specified conditions for academiccareers. Interwar legislation clearly distinguished academic education andassigned it a separate academic status based on the legal grounds used exclusivelyfor these institutions. In this connection, a formal notion of a universityteacher and his career were defined. The name “lecturer” concerned a personauthorized to teach due to a postdoctoral degree or appointment as a professor. This situation leads to the conclusion that in the interwar period the concept ofthe “lecturer” was limited as many members of academic staff, who did not havea postdoctoral degree, were eliminated from this definition. Trying to explain thisstate, it can be concluded that the professors were appointed by the legislature tobe responsible not only for conducting lectures and seminars, but also tutorialsand workshops. The task of the auxiliary academic staff was to support researchprofessors in the tasks of teaching and assist in research, pedagogical and organizationalwork as well as execute their directives. The functioning of a universitywas decided about only by the professors, who alone of all university employeeshad the right to be the part of its authorities. Two Academic Schools Acts of 1920and 1933 defined conditions of taking positions of an associate, ordinary andhonorary professor and a postdoctoral degree as a condition for the readershipand the right to teach.
