Aims and scope of the journal

The journal generally deals with old Polish literature and culture (from 10th until 18th centuries) and their universal European contexts, and the authors are usually young researchers of old Polish literature.

The journal’s scope of interest includes analyses of individual texts (or their related groups) (section: Profiles and Focuses), references to old Polish culture in later times (section: Contexts and References), and finally source texts edition (section: Inedita)

The journal does not publish texts reaching beyond this set of issues.

The „Melusine” journal concerns only a specific field of old Polish literature. Especially among young researchers whom the journal addresses and facing no research of the field or its limited scope in the chairs of Slavic studies within Western Europe, our journal promotes this research and encourages young researches from other EU countries to take part. That is why our Editorial Board features outstanding representatives of Slavic studies in Western Europe and related fields.

About us

Dear Reader,

we introduce „Melusine” - the semi-annual journal which is devoted to the old Polish literature and culture. The magazine is dedicated to the young researchers, that are at the beginning of their career: master and PhD students and doctors. We would like „Melusine” to offer the opportunity to meet representatives of many research centers and various environments, the adepts of the humanities who develop different approaches under the supervision of their own masters. Let our journal make them more confident in their first steps, give them the opportunity to compare and confront their opinions and may even be a source of astonishment and inspiration. For the experienced researches papers presented in „Melusine”can create a view of young generations’ interests, the advantages and, inevitably, some disadvantages of their workshop and their way of thinking.

We kindly ask our readers for critical but friendly support expressed in the discussions on the themes presented in „Melusine”.

Our decisions will be guided by faithfulness to the principles of philology and simple solidity. We hope to be a part of the effort in strengthening good research practices, preserving the standards of scientific inquiry that is indispensable to expand the knowledge about the „old ages”.

In two basic sections of „Melusine” („Profiles and Focuses”, „Contexts and References”) there will appear articles concerning the whole old literature and culture (including the Age of Enlightment), obviously with a special focus on Polish literature. The third constant section is titled „Inedita” and it is designed for source studies, which occupy a special place in philology. It is essential to discover new sources, which – in a way we cannot define now – will serve all of us in the future.

We invite our colleagues from abroad to publish in our journal. „Melusine” is wide opened for studies in the field of comparative research, however, related to the old Polish literature. We believe that there are still too few works done by non-Poles researchers. It is necessary to look at our old texts from their point of view to broaden the perspective. Therefore, we invite Slavists as well as the neo-Latinists, Romanists and Germanists to collaborate with us in order to create and re-establish the cultural community of our countries and languages.

All articles published in the “Melusine. Old Literature and Culture” are open access and available online upon publication.
