Abstract

Purpose – The reckless pursuit of fast and high profits from investment portfolios set off a selfenhancing mechanism of ever faster turnover of monies in the financial operations, which endangers stability of global financial markets and might engender the worldwide crisis in the real economy. The purpose of this article is presentation of recent developments in the quest for a new safety system for financial intermediaries, in particular banks. Design/methodology/approach – The method involves the analysis of documents issued by international regulatory authorities (including BIS and EBC) intended for creation of a new paradigm of safety for financial intermediaries, in particular banks that were once believed to be “too-big-to-fail” and currently considered “to-big-to-save”. Findings – Key legal regulations have been discussed, which are intended for better transparency and safety of banks and other financial institutions. Originality/value – Familiarity with the new international safety requirements is of essential importance to national financial institutions, in particular banks.
