Abstract

Purpose – The aim of the article is to determine, based on the analysis of articles published in the literature, whether non-orthodox approaches (here understood as all identifiable manifestations of the utilization of assumptions and/or methods from beyond the broad economic mainstream) are used in research in the field of agricultural finance, particularly in relation to financial intervention in the agricultural sector. Design/methodology/approach – The research methods included systematic review and meta-analysis, with elements of desk research and text mining. On the basis of the criteria accepted by the authors, allowing to identify articles on financial intervention in the agricultural sector in two scientific search engines (Scopus and Web of Science), a database was created containing basic information on selected articles (title, summary, keywords). Subsequently, the number (and percentage in the sample) of articles that utilize non-orthodox approaches (or at least refer to them) was determined using text mining methods and relying on the (developed by the authors) list of keywords characterizing works using such approaches. Findings – It was found that in selected articles on agricultural finance non-orthodox approaches are represented to a small extent, and if at all – by a broadly understood institutional approach or by the use of unorthodox research methods. Originality/value – The originality of the article consists, on the one hand, in the use of an original approach to the identification of non-orthodox approaches (distinguished by the authors from the concept of “economic heterodoxy” established in literature), and on the other – in the analysis of the (poorly examined in this respect) area of agricultural finance, with particular emphasis on the impact of financial intervention.
