Abstract

Purpose – This article attempts to identify the relationship between farmers’ preferences for risk management instruments and the level their farm revenues. Design/methodology/approach – Diagnostic survey method was used. Sampling was arbitrary. The study covered farms operators with knowledge of risk management (participating at IUNG-PIB workshops). The study sample consisted of mixed and mixed livestock, mainly male, with an average agricultural area of 108.3 ha. Findings – The results of empirical studies indicate that as interest rates increased, the propensity to buy insurance packages increased. In addition, decisions on risk management were more well thought out. In the small (in terms of revenues earned) farms the importance of diversification of income sources was underlined, while in the larger entities the importance of preventive measures was recognized. In each study group, there was a lack of adjustment of the insurance market to the specific needs of farmers, which could be seen as unwillingness to insure and the need for accommodative state policy on subsidized agricultural insurance. Originality/value – The results of pilot studies indicate the need to “fit” a set of risk management instruments adequate to the needs and financial situation of agricultural holdings. They contribute to the ongoing discussion on shaping risk management instruments (mainly crop insurance) in Polish family farming.
