Abstract

Examples of fraud in banks, taking place during the last crisis can be explained by lack of adequate supervision of financial institutions. In response, the aim of this study is to verify the following questions: Are the results of financial institutions sensitive to changes in the corporate governance? What is the impact of audit and monitoring of bank’s board on profitability? Does greater transparency of shareholders’ rights result better performance of banks? The survey was conducted for the period 2007–2014, in the scope of 81 commercial banks from 20 European countries. The survey results proved to be inconclusive, calling into question of growing share of corporate governance in the factors affecting the profitability of the banks.
