Abstract

Purpose – Presentation of scale and trends of merchandise trade between China and 21 countries of Latin America and between India and the region in the years 2000–2014. Design/methodology/approach – Statistical analysis based on UN Comtrade Database. Findings – Since the beginning of 21st century, an exponential growth of merchandise trade between Asian giants and Latin America has been observed. China has been rapidly increasing its share in Latin American market. In the years 2012–2014, it had trade surplus with the region. The value of India–Latin America trade is significantly lower than China–Latin America, but Indian average growth rate of trade is higher than Chinese. India is mainly a importer of Latin American goods. Both, China and India trade only with the largest economies in the region. Trade expansion of Asian giants undermines the role of the US and EU as major trading partners for Latin America. In the years 2012–2014, trade of China and India with Central and South America surpassed trade of the EU with the region. Originality/value – Comparison of the scale and dynamics of Sino-Latin and Indo-Latin merchandise trade. Reference of Asian giants’ trade with Latin America to trade of the United States, European Union, and Japan with the region.
