Abstract

Purpose – The aim of the article is the identification of export comparative advantages of the EU countries taking into account high tech, medium tech and low tech commodity groups, and their analysis in the context of export and technological convergence. Design/methodology/approach – Research methods used in the article are classical measures of sigma and beta convergence based on revealed comparative advantages in export. The period included in the article is between 1995–2014. Statistic data used in the analysis derived from UNCTAD database. Findings – There are significant diversity in export specialisation in the European Union countries. It is difficult to indicate export and technological convergence due to the fact that only in one commodity group the process occurred, co-called high tech goods: electronic and electrical. The divergent trends are in other high tech products and medium tech: automotive commodity. The situation in the rest of the groups is stable. Originality/value – The analysis of the relation between export specialisation and convergence was founded. The convergence is fundamental for the integration process. Findings from the analysis can have applicable character.
