Abstract

The article aims to present possible use of tourism consumption estimations for the assessment of the economic effects of tourism in metropolitan cities as exemplified by Warsaw, followed by their application as a support tool for urban development management. Such estimations allowed to assess direct effects in terms of demand generated by tourism, also broken down into major market segments. The comparison of information on trips of residents and non-residents allowed to evaluate which of the main groups of customers played a particularly significant role for producers of tourism services in Warsaw. The investigation also indicated the possibilities of and limitations on the use of the estimations made for strategic measures, whether taken by the municipal authorities or economic operators. The article points out available sources of information and has identified gaps in that respect.
