Medical Futility or Persistent Therapy? A Dispute over the Terms and Definitions in the Polish Context

Abstrakt

Artykuł przedstawia aktualną dyskusję wokół terminów „medyczna daremność” i „uporczywa terapia” oraz wokół ich definicji. Dyskusja ta opiera się na sporze dotyczącym tego, czy w polskich przepisach bioetycznych i medycznych należy odrzucić termin „terapia uporczywa” i zastąpić terminem „medyczna daremność”. Spór rozpoczął się po opublikowaniu przez Polską Grupę Roboczą ds. Etyki Końca Życia (PWG) w 2008 roku definicji terapii uporczywej. W celu przezwyciężenia sporu, autor proponuje zmodyfikowaną wersję definicji terapii uporczywej PWG, która łączy w sobie uporczywość i daremność. Autor twierdzi, że terapia uporczywa to stosowanie nadzwyczajnych lub przyczynowo nieskutecznych procedur medycznych w celu podtrzymania życia nieuleczalnie chorego pacjenta. Twierdzi również, że medyczna daremność może być przydatna dla bioetyki tylko wtedy, gdy jej definicja ogranicza się do czynników medycznych.
